What a dinner table is for
Why the most useful piece of furniture in a flat is the one nobody uses on weekdays.

Outline
In most small apartments the dinner table is a desk, a laundry rack and a place to drop keys. Meals happen on sofas, in front of screens, with plates balanced on knees. The table, if it exists, waits for guests.
Anthropologists who study households say the table is less a surface than a schedule. It tells everyone in the room that a certain kind of time has started, and that phones, tasks and half-finished arguments can wait for the length of a meal.
For one month I cleared our table every evening at six and set it for two, even when it was only soup. By week two we were lingering. By week three we were cooking things we would never have made for a sofa dinner. Nothing about the food changed. The frame did.
The lesson is not that everyone needs a bigger room. It is that rituals need a stage, and the stage can be as small as a card table, as long as it is cleared on purpose.

A secondhand wool coat, three zippers and the quiet case for owning fewer, older things.

Before the blue dot, getting lost was a skill, and finding your way was a conversation.

Closets are archives. The garments we cannot give away are footnotes to the people we were.
